Michael has held various technical, leadership, and advisory roles in ophthalmology. He has been a strategic advisor since 2016 to Keranova, a French company developing the next generation automated laser cataract system. Michael serves as Chairman and advisor to AcuSurgical, a French company developing a bimanual surgical robot for the ophthalmology surgical suite of the future. He is also currently a strategic product advisor for PulseMedica, a Canadian company developing new laser treatments in the posterior segment of the eye using novel 3D real time imaging and tracking with femtosecond laser targeting.
Over 20 years ago Michael was a very early member of the initial Intralase team. Intralase went on to help transform the refractive surgery market with its femtosecond laser surgical system, and was ultimately acquired by AMO for over $800M in 2007. Michael was VP of R&D at the time of acquisition and went on to get responsibility for the excimer laser and vision diagnostics groups while at AMO.
Michael has experience as a startup CEO for Gobiquity, which successfully brought a mobile phone based product to market for vision screening children for amblyopia. He was Chief Technology Officer of Powerlase in the UK, developer of high-power laser systems for industrial machining applications, and was VP of Product Development for GigaTerra in Switzerland, developer of a 40GHz laser transmitter for telecommunications markets.
Michael has a master’s degree in physics from San Diego State University and an extensive background in technology, product and business development, surgical systems, and product-market fit, and is an inventor on many patents.
